Amy Laughlin

Amy Laughlin’s practice is devoted to expertly handling whatever crisis the day brings. Whether it’s responding as a child custody lawyer when a client calls with a mental health crisis on a Friday morning. Or being a heads-up domestic violence lawyer when a report of a violent outburst at a client’s home occurs on a Sunday night. Or investigating complex financial matters as a complex divorce lawyer every other day of the week, she embraces opportunities to step it up: to learn a new skill, explore a new technology, and be at least one step ahead of opposing counsel. Most recently, Ms. Laughlin completed Harvard Business School’s Online Negotiation Mastery course to keep up with the rapid pace of development in the science of negotiation over the last 10 to 15 years.

As a result of years spent practicing securities litigation and representing the C-suite elite in Silicon Valley, Amy is an authority regarding high finance, specifically investigating and analyzing sophisticated and complex financial assets – including business valuations, venture capital, allocation of equity interests, tax and property characterization, etc. – and their impact on spousal and child support, move-away requests, Child Protective Services investigations and domestic violence. The experience trained her to take an exhaustive approach when dividing assets or determining custody and support in complex divorce cases, and as a result, Amy has delivered extraordinary outcomes in some of San Mateo’s most complex divorce & family law trials.

In addition to traditional divorce representation, Ms. Laughlin is certified to offer divorce mediation services and acts as consulting counsel to mediations. She also prepares and negotiates PreNuptial and PostNuptial agreements.

Amy is the divorced, pre-nupped, and remarried mother of two sons. Her policy of 24/7 responsiveness means she’s as likely to answer an evening call from a concert she’s attending with family as she is from the office or at home.

In a Client’s Words

“10 out of 10. Totally surpassed my expectations though I had never met anyone with as bad a case as I had. This firm is absolutely life-changing, some of the best child custody lawyers… Your attorney can lead you into all types of dark corners, and I felt like Amy and I were aligned, wanted the best outcome. Always respectful, never an unethical bulldog, never a pushover or softie. I didn’t have to sacrifice personal ethics or values. That can be hard to find. …And Amy is not afraid to go to trial. Some lawyers just want to settle, they’re nervous, can’t take that high pressure. Not Amy. And she’s really really good no matter the pressure. But she’s not going to push you to go to court. … I just knew she was going to kill it in court. And she did. I’m so thankful I had someone who was with me trying to figure out what’s best for my kid, and it goes way beyond the legal. Amy just gets things.”
